School-Based Support

School-Based Support That Helps Students Participate and Thrive

Positive Peer Pals provides individualized support that helps students communicate, participate in learning, navigate routines, build independence, and access meaningful opportunities throughout the school day.

When school-based services are clinically appropriate and permitted by the educational setting, we collaborate with caregivers and school teams while remaining focused on each student’s strengths, needs, dignity, and treatment goals.

OUR APPROACH TO SCHOOL SUPPORT

Meaningful school participation starts with understanding the whole student.

School-based support should be individualized, collaborative, and connected to the student’s actual learning environment. Goals are guided by clinical need and designed to increase access, communication, independence, safety, and meaningful participation.

🌱

Student-Centered Support

Support reflects the student’s strengths, communication style, learning needs, treatment priorities, and daily school routines.

🤝

Team Collaboration

With appropriate permission, we collaborate with caregivers, educators, and other team members to promote clarity and consistency across environments.

💬

Functional Communication

Students practice requesting help, breaks, clarification, preferred supports, and opportunities to participate and self-advocate.

🏡

Skills Within Natural Routines

Teaching occurs within relevant routines such as arrival, classroom work, transitions, lunch, recess, group activities, and dismissal.

🧩

Thoughtful Clinical Oversight

BCBAs review progress, observe implementation, adjust treatment, and support staff so services remain responsive to the student’s needs.

💜

Access Over Dependence

Support is designed to build participation and independence. Prompts are faded thoughtfully so students are not unnecessarily dependent on adult assistance.

AREAS OF SUPPORT

Building skills that support access to the school day.

School-based services may address a range of medically necessary goals. Priorities are individualized through assessment, caregiver input, observation, and coordination with the educational setting when appropriate.

01

Communication & Self-Advocacy

Requesting help, breaks, clarification, attention, materials, choices, and needed supports throughout the school day.

02

Classroom Participation

Following routines, engaging with instruction, completing functional tasks, managing materials, and participating with increasing independence.

03

Peer Interaction

Joining activities, communicating with peers, respecting boundaries, taking turns, cooperating, and participating in shared experiences.

04

Coping & Regulation

Recognizing distress, communicating emotions, requesting support, and using individualized coping strategies during challenging moments.

05

Transitions & Flexibility

Moving between locations and activities, responding to schedule changes, waiting, and using supports for unexpected events.

06

Safety at School

Responding to essential safety directions, remaining in designated areas, navigating campus routines, and seeking adult assistance.

07

Organization & Independence

Managing personal materials, following visual supports, completing routines, and gradually reducing reliance on adult prompts.

08

Replacement Skills

Understanding barriers to participation and teaching safer, more effective ways to communicate needs, cope, access support, and respond to expectations.

No two students need exactly the same support.

Recommendations are based on individualized assessment and medical necessity. Services supplement—not replace—the school’s educational responsibilities, and school access remains subject to authorization and district permission.

WHAT SCHOOL SUPPORT CAN LOOK LIKE

Support connected to natural learning routines.

The exact service model depends on assessment findings, authorization, school permission, and the student’s needs. When provided at school, support is designed around meaningful participation rather than completing academic instruction for staff.

🏠

Classroom Routines

Support may address requesting help, engaging with activities, managing materials, following routines, and completing functional steps more independently.

🏫

Transitions Across Campus

Students may practice moving between activities and locations, responding to schedule changes, waiting, and using supports during less predictable times.

🌎

Social Environments

Lunch, recess, group work, and shared activities may offer natural opportunities to practice communication, boundaries, cooperation, and self-advocacy.

👨‍👩‍👧

Caregiver & Team Collaboration

With proper authorization and consent, relevant team members can share information that supports consistency while respecting each person’s role and responsibilities.

A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH

Clinical support that respects the educational environment.

BCBAs guide treatment planning, review data, observe services, support direct-care staff, and collaborate with caregivers and school personnel when authorized.

School-based ABA addresses medically necessary treatment goals. It does not replace instruction, special education services, school staffing, or responsibilities established through the student’s educational program.

1

Assess

Understand strengths, needs, barriers, routines, and current skills.

2

Coordinate

Clarify permissions, roles, priorities, and the school-based service plan.

3

Teach & Collaborate

Support skill development within relevant routines and environments.

4

Review & Fade

Use progress data to adjust support and build greater independence.

CAREGIVER & SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

Students benefit when the adults supporting them communicate clearly.

Caregiver involvement remains essential when services occur at school. Families help identify priorities, share what works in other settings, and guide goals that are meaningful across the student’s life.

With appropriate consent and school permission, communication across the care team can support consistency, reduce confusion, and help skills generalize beyond one setting.

Collaboration works best when roles are clear, privacy is respected, and the student’s dignity and independence remain central.

Collaboration may include:

Shared Priorities

Identifying goals that are meaningful across home, school, social, and community settings.

Communication Supports

Supporting consistent access to functional communication, including AAC when applicable.

Consistent Strategies

Sharing relevant approaches while adapting them appropriately to each environment and routine.

Generalizing Skills

Helping communication, coping, safety, social, and independence skills carry over beyond one person or setting.

Problem-Solving Together

Reviewing barriers, progress, changing routines, and next steps while respecting the responsibilities of each team member.
